Solution If a user asks to be friends, you will need to accept them as a friend first. This can be done by visiting the "My Account" area and then going to "Friends". Once there to your right you should find a link "New Requests" and from here you can accept any new friends requests. If a user is found in your "Pending" section then these are requests sent from your end and the other party will need to accept the friendship before it is removed from the "Pending" section.
