On September 10 (Wed), the Government of Japan decided to provide emergency relief goods (plastic sheets, water purifiers, portable jerry cans, tents, blankets, sleeping mats and water tanks) equivalent to about 22 million yen to the Republic of Haiti, which has suffered from Hurricane Hanna and Hurricane Ike.
Hurricane Hanna passed the coast of the northern part of Haiti from September 1 to 2, local time. On September 7, Hurricane Ike passed over the northern sea area. According to the statistics of the Ministry of Interior of the Government of Haiti dated September 7, the two hurricanes left 172 persons dead, 27 missing, 99 injured, 71,108 persons in shelter and 86,537 households affected.
At present, people in Haiti are forced to live under difficult conditions caused by the collapse of houses by flood and landslide, power failure, lack of water supply and other problems. The Government of Haiti, while making utmost efforts for early recovery in the affected areas, has requested emergency assistance from the international community including Japan.
At the request of the Government of Haiti, the Government of Japan has decided to provide emergency assistance to offer humanitarian relief for the hurricane victims, as well as based upon the friendly relations between Japan and the Republic of Haiti.
